Every flight your Garmin avionics records is data you're probably not using. Garmin has just widened what you can do with it: two new services, Class A and Coflyt, join flyGarmin.com's flight log integrations, taking the list to 12.
What's new
- Class A is an aviation insurance carrier that uses real flight data to inform underwriting and tailor cover. Through the Garmin integration it is launching a flight operations quality assurance tool, giving owners the kind of flight-data review usually reserved for large professional flight departments.
- Coflyt is a cloud-based aircraft management platform. It pulls inspection and maintenance tracking, AD compliance, squawk sheets, scheduling, utilisation and flight data, payments and communications into one system.
The wider list
They join FlySto, Crewchief Systems, Savvy Aviation, Navi, Brazos Safety Systems, Jet-Care, Pilotbase, TBX, PLANELOGIX and AircraftMX. Between them they cover everything from flight school scheduling and maintenance tracking to recordkeeping and engine analysis, and some offer free or discounted services to flyGarmin users. Garmin lists the compatible avionics and each service at Garmin.com/FlightLogs.
What to check from a South African hangar
This is worth knowing about, but read the fine print before you plan around it.
- You need the connection. Automatic flight log sharing is built around Garmin's PlaneSync service and a GDL 60, which depends on a subscription and a working LTE or Wi-Fi link at the aircraft. Check coverage at your home field first.
- Not every service will suit a South African aircraft. Class A in particular is an insurer, so don't assume it will cover a South African-registered aeroplane. Ask before you count on it.
- Your records are still yours. A cloud platform doesn't replace your logbooks or your AMO's maintenance records, and Garmin is clear that it isn't responsible for keeping them up to date.
Where it does pay off
Engine trend analysis, utilisation tracking and AD reminders are useful whatever country you fly in, and the data is already being collected. If you have a compatible Garmin panel and PlaneSync, we can talk you through what to connect and what's worth your time.
